Intro

The workplace is ever evolving. While in the early 2010’s having coding skills could land you a job in an instant, now the emphasis has shifted to AI skills. Today, employees need to constantly evolve their skills and learn new things to stay relevant in the workplace.

And companies need to provide these learning opportunities to ensure that their employees can do their jobs. All of these processes combined are called talent development, and today, we’ll explore why they are relevant in the workplace and how you can benefit from them.

But first, let’s define what talent development is.

What is talent development?

Talent development is a bunch of processes that you have in your organization with which you ensure that your employees’ skills are relevant and that they have the ability to operate successfully in their roles.

With talent development, you’re making sure not only that your employees have relevant skills today, but that they also prepare for the marketplace of tomorrow.

Why talent development matters in today’s workplace

Did you know that the half-life of a skill today is only 5 years? That means that the skill that you have today will only be half as valuable in five years as it is today.

Because if you don’t invest in talent development, a lose-lose situation will happen:

  • Your employees’ skills will no longer be relevant in the market. This means that you won’t be able to take any projects from your clients because you won’t have the skills in your organization to deliver the project. This will be disastrous for your company’s bottom line.
  • When your employees notice that the organization isn’t investing resources in the development of their skills, they will either (actively) disengage from work or they’ll quit. Employees want to develop their skills and stay relevant in the job market. If you don’t provide them with an opportunity for that, your competitors will.

5 benefits of talent development

There are multiple benefits of talent development, but the following ones are the most impactful in the market today:

  • Employee engagement and retention. When you have talent development processes in your company, you’re actively investing in your employees. That signals to all of your employees that you care about their personal and professional development, creating a win-win scenario. On top of employees becoming more engaged in the workplace, they stay longer in the organization because you provided them with learning opportunities. This isn’t something they can easily get with other employers so they stay within the organization, improving your retention rate.
  • Succession planning. When you improve employee engagement and retention, you get longer tenure of your employees in the company. That means that you have a bigger pool of people to choose from when it comes to replacing mission-critical roles. On top of this, you can also create succession planning programs and ensure your rockstar employees get additional relevant skills from them. This will make them better leaders and make your organization more successful.
  • Improved productivity. The more you invest in talent development, the bigger the skillset your employees get. The better the skillset they have, the more productive they become. So if you invest in improving the skills of your employees, they will repay it by increasing their output, positively impacting your company’s bottom line.
  • Attracting candidates. Not only is talent development great for your employees, but you can use it as a brand benefit to attract new, great candidates. When people apply for a job in a company, they look for the benefits and having talent development as one of them is a good way to attract the best talent out there.
  • Culture of improvement. Talent development brings in many things, but it also signals to people the things that the company won’t tolerate. When you invest in talent development, you’re signaling to your employees that you want them to improve and never stop learning. This will repel the people who don’t want to give their best in the workplace and learn new things.

Conclusion

If you’re serious about investing in your team, you should first look into the right tools that would serve as a foundation for it. That’s why you should invest in an intranet. A good intranet can serve as a central repository of information and provide access to all of your members, ensuring that you have a library of information that your employees can look into, anytime, anywhere.
