The process of localization involves tailoring a product or service, particularly with respect to language, to suit the requirements and tastes of a particular culture or region. Localization encompasses not only translation, but also communication and cultural adjustments, and can be applied to a variety of content formats.

For any business, the crucial need for language localization, and by extension a multilingual intranet, assists in connecting with employees and fostering more robust relationships.

What is the difference between localization and translation?

While translation is important, creating an inclusive intranet for people from diverse cultures involves accommodating cultural differences, linguistic specificities, legal requirements, and other factors.

To clarify further:

Translation involves converting a message from one language to another. Localization involves modifying a translated message to fit the recipient’s local context. This significant difference emphasizes the importance of translation in the localization process. These processes are interconnected and contribute to the overarching concept of globalization.

Language legislation in Canada highlights the importance of a multilingual intranet

In May 2022, the Province of Quebec passed Bill 96 that brings significant amendments to the Charter of the French Language by strengthening the rules respecting when French is to be used by businesses operating in Québec and businesses transacting with Québec clients and customers. Bill 96 explicitly extends employer’s obligation to provide communications to its employees in French on:

  • Written communications to the staff or an employee, including those following the termination of the employment relationship.
  • Employment application forms;
  • Documents relating to conditions of employment;
  • Training documents created for the employees.
