Intranet

What does a financial institution actually need from its intranet in 2026? Our CEO Rob Nikkel sat down with Finopotamus co founder John San Filippo to answer that question; and how we’ve rebuilt our platform around it.

From Static Intranets to Digital Workplaces

Intranets have come a long way from the static, IT-managed sites they used to be. The category has grown into something the industry now calls the “digital workplace.” It’s a more dynamic, connected way for teams to get work done together.

That raises a fair question for financial institutions already living in Microsoft 365 and Teams. Why do you still need an intranet? Our position is that chat tools are built for speed, not organization. “Searching through Teams is a little bit more cumbersome, it’s a lot more difficult” Rob told Finopotamus. Whereas the intranet is where policies, procedures, knowledge, and workflows live as the source of truth.

AI, Backed by Real Governance

As AI continues to disrupt the financial tech space, many financial institutions are looking to leverage it to securely navigate internal knowledge bases.

IC 3.0 has been built that curiosity in mind. This launch brings with it, AI-powered search across an organization’s intranet and SharePoint content. Teams can ask natural-language questions like they’re used to instead of hunting keywords. However, Rob noted, that there are limits to AI’s capabilities. AI is only as good as the data behind it. In a regulated industry, policies and rates change constantly. Strong content governance isn’t optional.

Lower Maintenance and Faster Approvals

The conversation also touched on system prioritization. Advanced intranet deployments have historically demanded heavy IT resources. Rob acknowledged that many financial institutions would rather spend that time on their core banking systems, which is why IC 3.0 is built to run on a cost effective, low maintenance shared cloud.

Lastly, Rob touched on how IC is already helping financial institutions. Every day, branches across the US and Canada use IC’s Forms and Workflow solution to keep things moving, automating approvals without requiring technical expertise with full audit trails built in. Organizations use it for everything from PIN changes to lost card requests giving them a documented trail of how every member request gets handled.
