2022 State of the Sector Summary

The past two years have been a wild ride. Since the first State of the Sector publication of this decade, the world has been plunged into a pandemic, we are in the throes of a Great Resignation, and our economy functions very, very differently—not to mention the “smaller” changes such as a new President, new diplomatic relations, and advancements in AR and AI.

With over 20 plus years of experience helping connect businesses big and small, we’ve learned to adapt to change quite a bit. When our experts analyzed the 2022 State of the Sector, we realized that we offered solutions for the problems your internal comms strategies are no doubt facing this year And after all, as we’ve said before, 2022 is the year to really double down on investing in internal comms.

In this blog, we’ll go over some key findings in the 2022 State of the Sector and explore some ways our software and best practices can help you solve some big caveats, and work towards your internal comm goals!

State of the Sector 2022: what are the challenges?

Of the numerous companies polled for this year’s State of the Sector, 37% of them stated that “disengaged employees” are their top challenge. This was followed by a “lack of capacity/human resource in my team” and “lack of analytics/measurement”; with 32 and 27 percent respectively.

And this is not a surprise to anyone within the internal comms/HR/IT world currently. If you’re responsible for overseeing your corporation’s internal communications, chances are you have noticed how much harder it is to keep employees engaged with each other and your organization’s goals.

Furthermore, thanks to the Great Resignation, you probably have felt the lack of human capital; and with the lack of proper analytics tools for internal communicators (we get the short-end-of-the-stick, compared to the plethora of analytics tools built for our cousins, the external communicators), we’re often left guessing as to how engaging and impactful our internal comms actually is.

What internal communicators want to get done in 2022

Internal communicators need were discussed in the 2022 State of the Sector.

The majority of those polled stated that their main goal for this sector was to engage teams around purpose, strategy, and values (coincidentally, or not, this is our software’s mission).

Another major goal for internal communicators is adapting to hybrid work, a uniquely ‘20s situation we’ve discussed before (here, here, and here!). Every company wants to be seen as “fun”, but with your workforce potentially unable to congregate in one place—due to the global nature of the modern workforce—planning community-building activities can be a challenge.

On top of that “fun” aspect, there is a huge logistical aspect of remote work as well. What channels work best? Which channels should you choose to inform employees of important updates within your company?
